For a four-day week, the Pre- Prep has most certainly been jam-packed with more wonderful learning experiences. I am always so incredibly proud of the children and department and this is particularly evident when I am conducting prospective parent tours, of which there have been many over the last week. The confident, articulate children we have are excellent advocates for Windlesham, keen to talk about their learning across all areas of the curriculum. Each classroom is alive with children who are sharing their wonders, being responsible for their own learning and taking part in the reflection process; deciding how their steps to success have been achieved. There are so many times I hear ‘Ah now I get it’ because the children are being given the opportunity to take an active role in their learning. Teamwork has been the pastoral theme this week and on Wednesday we had the excitement of our first Pre-Prep house meetings of the term. The children delight in sharing activities with their houseparents, much fun was had by all. We very much hope in the near future to be able to give the children the opportunity to come together with their prep school house members.
Have a wonderful weekend
A four-day week sure does zoom by but we managed to squeeze in an awful lot! We have been expectantly examining our planters for signs of sunflowers, beans or wildflowers sprouting each day this week but alas - still no green shoots! We predicted they might make their appearance next week if they have enough sunshine over the weekend. Together we used the smartboard to check the weather and we weren’t convinced by all of the cloud and rain symbols. Although spying temperatures in the teen numbers made us think maybe it will be warm enough after all.
This week we spent a great deal of time playing in the garden outside having picnics with the baby dolls, pretending to be builders fixing the willow dome and creating games with so many rules they had to be written down. The games with rules have shown an increase in the children’s social play skills and have created a brilliant opportunity to work through problem-solving, negotiating and conflict resolution. In our morning message, we have been using our segmenting skills to count the sounds in words and try our best to write them using our phonetic awareness.
The lambing videos we have been watching have taught us so much! Did you know that sheep have cloven hooves with two toes on each foot? The class was very fascinated by the scanner the farmer uses to check how many babies each ewe is going to have. Many of the children chose to summarise their learning by drawing a picture and writing some of the facts they had acquired.
Ship ahoy! We have been learning about transport on the water this week and have had to apply our scientific minds to a number of water investigations.
We explored many different objects and discussed which materials would float and which would sink in order to establish the best boat-building objects. Some accurate predictions were made but wood proved to be our most popular choice. Although, the sad sight of a sinking pair of pants (clean!) was a particular highlight!
We also investigated water resistance to see if the shape of something has an impact on the speed at which it sinks. The children were very quick to work out that streamlined shapes drop through the water more quickly than wide, flat shapes. They enjoyed using the stopwatch on the iPad to measure how long each drop took.
I hope you have been challenged to float a paperclip on the surface of the water by your child! I also hope that they show you the secret to doing so!
We have used known number facts in maths to solve problems. We were super at remembering how to double and all recalled our number bonds to 10. Some of our bonds to 20 had escaped our memories, so it would be really helpful to brush up on these.
In art, we painted nautical scenes and cut out 2D shapes for boats. We are in search of natural frames to display our efforts next week. Plus, there will be an interview with an ex-sailor from the Royal Navy. Get your thinking caps on for questions to ask him!
This week has been another adventurous one… our shrinking stories have really taken off and our mini-mes have been on all sorts of wild and wonderful journeys. Our writing has come such a long way and we are filling our stories with beautiful similes, interesting sentence structures and impressive vocabulary. We really are the most fabulous authors! Our artwork was equally impressive; this week we used oil pastels to add the colour and detail to our minibeasts. We then finished them off with a shrunken photo of ourselves in a position to hitch a ride!
In maths, we have continued our focus on fractions but this week we have been finding fractions of numbers. We understand the importance of equal groups when finding fractions, as well as using manipulatives and arrays to find fractions, we are beginning to use our knowledge of multiples and our timetables to help us calculate. This is not an easy topic but we have tackled it with confidence!
Our class caterpillars have had a real growth spurt this week and we are excitedly anticipating the next step in their life cycle. Our chrysalis stations are ready and waiting and we are keeping a close eye on how much food the caterpillars are eating and how much wiggling they are doing. We have also been looking out for
butterflies around the Windlesham gardens to see who our butterflies will be neighbouring with when we release them. We are becoming quite the experts!
