Year 3

Year 3 have had time focussing on problem solving using pentominoes and tangrams. We were using all strands of our habits for learning - especially resilience and risk taking. Not only academic risk taking, but social risk taking: it takes a lot of courage to try something in a group to then find out it was wrong. The children demonstrated kindness and encouragement as they worked through the many problems. Through team work and sharing solutions, all the children were successful.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been continuing their topic on money and financial literacy, putting their numeracy skills to the test by becoming party planners. They were tasked with planning a coronation party, catering for 60 guests. They were given a strict budget and a list of requirements from the party organisers and had to apply their knowledge of decimals and the four operations to successfully pull it off and hopefully make a profit!

Year 5

Mrs Marchant’s set has been looking at long (teen) multiplication. The children worked in small groups to see if they could create steps to answer the ‘problem’, using their understanding of place value. Some of the children were invited up to discuss their ‘steps’ and methods, using mathematical language. They were able to identify potential mistakes and misconceptions.

Year 6

Mrs Mason’s set has been exploring methods for converting between fractions and recurring decimals. They used a problem-solving exercise that was published in 1967 to investigate strategies and they worked collaboratively to evidence examples.

Year 8

In a break from their scholarship maths papers, Year 8 / A1 maths have been studying investment trusts, learning about terminology like ‘pound cost averaging’, Net Asset Value, a share being at a ‘discount’ and ‘dividend yield’.

They have also, in teams, researched and chosen five investment trusts to follow for the remainder of term. Annual reports were perused, along with the AIC (Association of Investment Companies) website to assist them in their selection.
